01 · The list

Every word,
most frequent first

The thousand most frequent words of the National Institute of Korean Language's beginner vocabulary, in frequency order: the first 783 are the Beginner 1 pack of Lock&Learn Korean and carry a real example sentence each, the rest continue into Beginner 2. Frequency is what makes a list worth learning in order: the first hundred words here cover a surprising share of everyday speech, and by the thousandth you read simple texts without a dictionary. Every entry shows the hangul, its Revised Romanization and an English meaning.

In Lock&Learn Korean these words are the Beginner 1 and Beginner 2 packs, dealt one per glance: a word waits in hangul with its romanization; one tap reveals the meaning and a real sentence. Beginner 1 is free in the app; Beginner 2 opens with a free preview and another word unlocks daily, or Lock&Learn+ opens every pack at once.

Type to filter by hangul, romanization or meaning. Flashcards hides the meaning until you tap a row; Shuffle deals the list in a new order.

How were the 1,000 most common Korean words chosen?

By frequency rank in the source list: the National Institute of Korean Language's beginner learner vocabulary, ordered by how often each word occurs, as compiled in the list the attribution names. Lock&Learn Korean splits that band by the same rank into its Beginner 1 and Beginner 2 packs, so the first 783 words here are Beginner 1 in order and the rest are the top of Beginner 2.

Is knowing these 1,000 words enough to speak Korean?

Enough to follow simple conversation and read easy texts, not enough for the news. The most frequent thousand words cover a large share of everyday speech, which is why frequency order is worth studying; TOPIK I draws on this band, and the full TOPIK I list holds the rest of it.
