Your data
stays yours

This policy covers every Lock&Learn app: trivia, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Spanish. They are built so that your data stays yours. The short version: no accounts, no ads, no tracking, and no record of what you study. The only things that ever leave your phone are a purchase receipt, checked anonymously so your unlock stays valid, a few anonymous details about your first-run setup, which App Store ad brought you here if one did, and any idea you choose to send us.

Almost no data collection

The Lock&Learn apps have no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and they keep no record of how you use them day to day. Everything an app knows, such as which topics or levels you enabled, which facts or words you saved, and your streak, is stored on your device and shared only with that app’s own widgets through Apple’s App Group storage. It never leaves your phone. The exceptions, a purchase, a few first-run details, ad attribution and ideas you choose to send, are described below.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications for new questions or words, they are scheduled locally on your device. No push servers are involved, and they stay off unless you enable them.

Topic requests

If you choose to request a new topic, the app opens your own email app with a pre-filled draft. Sending it is up to you, and the email arrives like any ordinary email you would write yourself.

Purchases

Lock&Learn+ purchases, whether a monthly or yearly plan or an earlier lifetime unlock, are charged by Apple through your App Store account. We never see your payment details, and buying does not create an account with us. To confirm a purchase is genuine and keep it unlocked, the apps use RevenueCat, a subscription service that receives your App Store receipt, a random identifier the app makes up for itself, and basic device information such as the iOS and app version. None of this is linked to your name, email or Apple ID, none of it is used for advertising or tracking, and it is what makes Restore Purchases work on a new device. RevenueCat also gives us aggregate purchase reporting, such as how many people subscribe and how many stay, which Apple’s App Privacy label counts as analytics; it cannot be traced back to you. RevenueCat’s own policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.

First-run details

While you set up an app for the first time, it tells RevenueCat a few anonymous details about that setup: how far through it you got, your score on its three-question quiz, the level you are aiming for, how many locked levels you picked, whether you added the widget, and which Lock&Learn+ offer screens you saw. They sit next to the same random identifier as your purchase, are not linked to your name, email or Apple ID, and we only look at them in aggregate, to see where the setup loses people. Nothing about what you study afterwards is sent.

Ad attribution

We advertise the apps in App Store search results through Apple Ads. If you install an app after tapping one of those ads, Apple’s AdServices framework lets RevenueCat look up which campaign, ad group and search keyword the ad belonged to, and stores that next to the same random identifier. We only look at it in aggregate, to see which ads bring people who keep learning and subscribe, and stop paying for the ones that don’t. This is Apple’s standard attribution, which does not ask for tracking permission because it cannot follow you across other apps or websites. If you found the app without an ad, Apple simply reports that there was none.

Ideas you send

If you use “Share an idea”, what you write, and your email address if you add one, is saved in Lock&Learn’s database in Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit), together with the app it came from, its version and your language setting. Only we can read it; other people using the apps cannot. We use it for one thing: reading your idea and, if you left your email, writing back. Saving it goes through your iCloud account, but we never see your Apple ID. Email hello@locklearn.xyz if you would like an idea deleted.

Apple’s App Privacy label for these apps therefore lists Purchase History, used for app functionality and analytics, and Product Interaction and Advertising Data, used for analytics, none of them linked to your identity; and, for ideas you choose to send, Other User Content and Email Address, used for app functionality and linked to that idea. None of it is used for tracking.

Children

The Lock&Learn apps do not collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new date at the top.
